Health Care?  I believe that health care has to be born by the individual and the local community.  The federal government cannot be involved in national health care. If society is forced to pay for an individuals health care then society must be able to limit the risky behavior of individuals to an unacceptable extent.  I remember, as many of you will, a saying from my parents that is almost always some variation of "as long as you live under my roof".  The reason this saying is used is because when someone else is bearing the risk and paying the price then they deserve a say in the decisions made.  There needs be a direct correlation in every instance between the choice and the cost.  In fact there needs to be a total static link between choices and the benefits or costs of those those choices.  That is just and fair!  For example it is unfair to expect one individual who eats salads for lunch and runs a mile a day to pay just as much to the general fund for health care as someone who smokes 2 packs of cigarettes a day while sitting on the couch eating McDonald's.  We can't control the health risks individuals take and if they do not bear the burden of their own health care it is not fair to the responsible folks who take care of themselves.  Do we need affordable health care? Yes, but define affordable.  Will health care be affordable if you eat fast food every day... become drastically over weight and develop diabetes?  probably not!  Should it be?  Probably not.  Not that I don't care for sick people but we have to address the real issue.  We are each responsible for our own choices and we need to make good choices or else we need to prepare for the consequences.  If you want to engage in risky behavior like smoking that is fine but you need to be aware of the risks and buy good insurance and if you are unwilling to pay the premium for that good insurance then you either have to risk the health problems and the financial problems that will come with it or quite the risky behavior.  Obviously with this I believe that we need to educate children on healthy behavior from a young age at home and in school, both privet and public.  Prevention needs to be a focus as well as healthy living but people also need the freedom to choose for themselves.  Knowledge is important to freedom and liberty because to use liberty responsibly you have to be informed in your decisions.  While that is not a real goal of government it is a concern which is under governmental jurisdiction and should therefore be encouraged.  Distribution of knowledge should be dealt with in privet sector when possible but if there is a market failure so that important data is not being found and delivered so that individuals can make good decision I believe that government can aid in giving people the option to become informed by making the information available.  This should be scarce and used as lightly as possible however.  The most important realm for this is in government operations, especially the justice system and actions of elected officials, and in the health arena where the decisions if made wrong impact life or livelihood.

Education?  I believe that education is necessary for the American way of life.  The more education the better.  Furthermore, I believe that their are positive externalities for society from education.  I believe that the education system should be based on desire to move ahead however  The student and parents need to have a responsibility in education.  I believe that we should set up a program to replace all of the current federal funding of education.  If you want federal funding in High school then I believe that you need to maintain a 2.5 GPA.  If you don't care then we shouldn't have to pay for it.  If you won't maintain a reasonable record then you should be offered vocational school.  if you desire to stay in High School without the record of performance then that is fine too but you will bear more of the costs.  Likewise college should be based on a two tier system.  There should aid for academic achievement so that it is easy for our best and brightest to get the education they need.  This is a direct reward for behavior beneficial to society.  If you take your education seriously then I believe that society should as well.  I do not mean a free ride however but simply a subsidized ride.  Both those with a solid record of performance and those without are free to attend college just like high school.  However, like high school the costs are greater if you don't have and maintain a record of performance.  At any time you can move from one tier to another by showing performance over a reasonable period of time (two consecutive semesters).  Both groups should also have a way of financing their education if their families can't afford it or if they want more education then they can afford.  I think government should offer them, both tiers, an option to have their college paid for in exchange for an altered tax bracket in the future.  Students who desire an education should be able to get it and then simply pay slightly higher taxes to pay back society for the investment in them.  For example, if I want to go to college but can't afford it on my own I can opt to raise my taxes for the rest of my life by a reasonable amount to repay the government for the investment so that government can then use the extra revenue to give someone younger than me the same opportunity.  i get the good education and society gets more funds for future education programs!  I believe that the tax increase required would be small since the government would recoup its investment over the entire life of the student.   Furhter the increase should be tied to the value received.  If I want to go to an expensive privet school or to a cheap public school my increase in tax rates should be based on the cost.  So if I want to go to Harvard and pay $50k a year I will have a larger tax increase that someone who goes to UNA and pays $8k a year.  Further with performance scholarships to cover a portion for those who put forth the effort to create a record of performance their costs would be lower and therefore they would be rewarded for their efforts with lower increases.  This shouldn't be a guessing game.  Actuaries need to be used to calculate fair rates based on the likely return and the interest calculated on by the actuaries should cover likely inflation only meaning that since this is a percentage base the government would be paid back only slightly more on average than they invest... with obvious exceptions for those who are extremely successful or lazy.  I believe this a fair resolution and gives real choices to students to better their lives.  Of course the standard privet loans will still be available as an option as well for those who would rather pay back with low interest the amount regardless of their success.  I further believe that privet and public schools should be treated the same by government.  If you want to send your child to a public or privet school you should get the same subsidy from the federal government since the point is that the child gets educated!  It doesn't matter where so long as it happens in the most efficient way possible and the individual families are better judges of what is best for their children than is government!

Economics Issues 02/26/2009

Economics Issues?  Well my ideas are simple really.  People respond to incentives.  We must align incentives in such a way that government is needed as little as possible.  A large role in incentives lies with well defined and protected property rights.  People tend to act in their own self interest and by doing so, if limited so as not to infringe on others, will benefit society in aggregate.  As Adam Smith says it is not the generosity of the baker or butcher that dinner is on the table each night but by all acting in their own self interest under the rules established by fair property rights.  I want people to have control of their own lives and destiny.  I believe that if someone wants to spend the time and energy to create a business or to become an asset to society they be free to receive the benefits of that.  If an able bodies individual doesn't want to work then they should likewise reap the rewards of that.  Social nets of protection should be as light and small as possible.  Do I want starving kids?  NO! but we must be cautious in how we deal with problems because subsidizing starving kids by giving their parents a pay check could in some cases create more children in poverty that we have to take care of.  I believe that the best solution is one that requires the community to be involved.  I have no problem with the government coming in under the community efforts to provide basic substance if the community fails but that should be limited to shelter in a public facility, basic nourishment and advisement capable of finding the individuals, if able adults, training and work so that they can move out of the safety net into productive society.  I believe that if an able bodied person is dependent on government aid for more than six months the system has failed.  I further believe that if an individual requires government assistant they should be submitted to drug tests and be required to work on either finding a job or on training that will help them find a job.  I have no problem with government helping people in trouble but it has to be structured to move people forward not to hold them down!

Part of my Economic Plan to do away with the Manipulation which presently occurs from the FED.  The FED manipulates interest rates and thus creates market failures.  But I will have other posts on that subject in the near future.  For now I just say that government should regulate the economy.  If the nation is a ball game governments role is to set and enforce the rules of the game.  When government starts impacting how the game is played something is wrong.  Government likes to bring in fans to effect who's favor the wind blows in and hoses to determine if the field is wet and all these other factors... it even likes to add players to the game like Freddie and Fannie.  I say no to such interference!  The basic rules required for the game to work and their enforcement... everything else should be up to the players!

You should support me because I am like you.  I am a normal guy that understands both the struggles and opportunities that living in this great nations brings us.  I am not a politician... I am a Statesman!  I will not bend to public opinion polls and most importantly I will never change my mind to please a lobby or special interest.  I will make my decision based on careful analysis of the data and I will be concerned with both the short run and long term impacts of my decisions as oppose to most politicians today who care about the next election cycle.
I, like most of you, believe strongly in freedom and liberty.  It is freedom and liberty that make America great not education, not wealth, not democracy; those these things are very good!  But they are not the true key to American greatness.  It is the individual that makes America stand out among the nations.  It is the creativity and ingenuity and genius of the American entrepreneur that truly sets America apart.   I believe in the principles of our founding fathers.  My philosophy is a simply one.  It follows after George Washington's opinion that government is like a fire.  Fire is a very useful tool but it is a fearful master.  So government is a tool to be used to maintain society but it must be contained.  If a fire grows to large it endangers everything around it, even itself.  So too is government dangerous and in need of control.  Our government needs to be douse with water! and I intend to be the fireman.
Government does few things well.  So what do I think Government should be and do? The answer is set out in a single phrase: "Property Rights."  Property Rights make the foundation of liberty.  It is for property rights that government exists and that is the only reason.  Government must protect its citizens from foreign enemies who wish to plunder and abuse them.  It is therefore the duty of government to mount and maintain a strong defense.  It is further the duty of government to protect its citizens from each other.  We must protect the weakest citizens rights in order to protect our own.  That is government and that is society.  Government must protect the right to Life, Liberty and Property but that is all it should do.  The role of government is to set the ground rules and enforce them.  The playing of the game is left to us.
Should there be regulation?  Yes, regulation is sometimes needed.  Here are my guiding principles.  Government does few things well and regulation is not one of the things it does well.  However, in order to protect the rights of citizens government must regulate in some instances.  For example, fraud is a clear violation of property rights and therefore the courts can deal with that but regulation is needed to ensure openness that brings the fraud to light.  Without regulation to require openness and fair dealings in contracts and finance we may not be able to protect property rights.  Further, companies of insurance and other type industries must be regulated to prevent them from breaching their contract in such a way that there is no recourse.  For example, without regulation an insurance company could take very risky gambles with policy holder money.  If they win the gamble they make a huge profit but if they lose they file bankruptcy and only the policy holders are harmed.  This is the realm of government.
So how do we know when and what to regulate.  Well the answer is quite simple.  My rights end where yours begin.  Therefore regulation is needed to set the boundaries between those interests when those interests cannot be protected in other ways.  Regulation should be the last resort to protect property rights because rights are best and most efficiently preserved by the individuals.  Conflict resolution should be left to individuals and courts but where the natural structures and existing governmental structures fail to deal with the damages or externatilites then regulation is necessary.  It should be as clear cut and simple as possible when necessary and strictly enforced.

The Run! 02/14/2009

I intend to run for president.  I want to run for president because it is evident to me that those running our country simply do not understand...  anything!  I am starting now because I want a grass roots campaign.  I have no desire to be beholden to corporate America or the liberal left to finance my campaign.  I want to fight and win with the people on the issues not on TV with Mud!  So what do I believe and why should you support me?
